What the Tide Leaves

Mariko Hale photographs the moment the tide turns, when the water stops moving in either direction. On a large-format camera that moment is barely long enough for one exposure, and most days she does not get it.

Waiting as method

The fourteen photographs in the Project Space were made over three years on the Solway, the Wash and the mudflats off Whitstable. They are printed large and hung low, so you stand in them rather than look at them.
